Southern Cal Nips Nittany Lions in Thriller
It was the highest-scoring Rose Bowl game ever played and Southern Cal's Matt Boermeester capped the scoring with a game-clinching 46-yard field goal as time expired.
The result was a 52-49 victory for the Southern California Trojans over the (No. 5) Penn State Nittany Lions, but the Trojans (No. 9) had to rally from a 14-point deficit in the fourth quarter for the spectacular win in Pasadena, Monday, Jan. 2, 2017.
Leon McQuay III intercepted a Penn State pass and returned it 32 yards with 27 seconds left to set up Boermeester's game-winning field goal.
Deontay Burnett, a 6-foot, 170-pound wide receiver who had three TD catches, caught a tying 27-yard scoring pass from Darnold with 1:20 left to cap an 80-yard drive.
Penn State's Saquon Barkley rushed for 194 yards and two touchdowns.
The Trojans' Freshman Quarterback Sam Darnold passed for 453 yards and five touchdowns.
After the game Darnold said, "It was a whole team effort. We never gave up."
