THE TIDE ROLLSAlabama’s Jacob Coker passed for two touchdowns, as the No. 2 Crimson Tide (13-1) rolled past No. 3 Michigan State, 38-0, in the Goodyear Cotton Bowl Classic in Arlington, Texas, December 31.
Coming into the game, Alabama leaned heavily on the ground game, but Coker threw the ball 30 times — with a completion rate of 83 percent.
Heisman winner Derrick Henry also contributed two rushing touchdowns in the College Football Playoff semifinal game.
Alabama’s stifling defense held Michigan State (12-2) to 239 yards of total offense.
The shutout ended Michigan State’s incredible season as well as the Connor Cook era, which included a pair of Big Ten titles.
The first half was closely played. With 25 seconds left in the half, Michigan State looked as though it might trim the deficit to 10-7. But Alabama cornerback Cyrus Jones intercepted a pass at the Alabama 12-yard line to preserve the shutout for the SEC champions.
